Nickel Silver - information

Nickel silver is a silvery-white lustrous alloy of copper (50%), zinc (30%) and nickel which may or may not contain admixtures of elements such as lead, tin, manganese or iron. It is characterized by being harder than copper and resistant to corrosion. The metal was originally developed to provide a cost-effective alternative to silver. It's long been used in China under the name of China Silver. Since its discovery, nickel silver has been used for making jewellery, art, and everyday objects. Nickel silver is often visually indistinguishable from real silver and thus very popular in jewellery making. Since it was initially produced mainly in Germany, in English and Spanish speaking countries it is also known as German Silver.
