TOMBAK - information

Tombak is a form of copper alloy, which makes it a special variant of brass. A special attribute of tombak is its very high copper content of at least 67 percent. As with all types of brass, zinc (about 30 percent), tin, or lead are more important components of this alloy. Tombak was actually designed to become a convenient and visually appealing substitute for gold. The origins of the metal date back to antiquity. The correct understanding of how to correctly smelt tombak from copper and zinc was only developed during the mid-17th century. Due to its beautiful reddish-gold color, tombak has been a popular choice for jewellery and art making ever since.
